The latest Airbus Global Market Forecast predicts that Russia's passenger fleet of aircraft, comprising 100 seats or more, will increase from 535 aircraft in service in 2008 to more than 1,030 by 2028. This means that over the next 20 years, Russian airlines will need more than 1,000 aircraft, valued at US$90 billion, to meet fleet growth and aircraft replacement, said the Russian Transport Daily Report. It said these additional aircraft will include around 830 short haul, single-aisle aircraft and 160 medium to long range, wide-body aircraft to meet strong international travel growth. The growing demand for aircraft has been attributed to the strong increase in passenger traffic as the nation experiences consistent economic growth. Airbus ranks Russia sixth among the top 10 countries for passenger aircraft demand after the US, China, UK, Germany and India. Airbus forecasts that passenger traffic in Russia will experience an annual growth rate of 5.6 per cent on average for the next 20 years, above the world average of 4.7 per cent. The biggest traffic growth is expected to be seen on Asia-Pacific (up 7.9 per cent) and Latin-America routes (up 7.3 per cent). The report added that Russia's seven airlines currently operate 140 Airbus aircraft, with over 80 planes scheduled for delivery in the near future.
